The blade is excellent work and extremely heavy, it dates to early Edo period Wakizashi and remains unaltered, accompanied with recent NBTHK Certification. The nakago (tang) is ubu and signed “Settsu ju Sukeharu kore o tsukuru”, Sukeharu was from what we know today the city of Osaka. Osaka region was known for beautiful work both grain texture and tempering, like in what we see in this piece. It is particularly interesting because it has a very rare theme integrated in the temper line which you may have noticed by now, what we call Tobiyaki (a separation of hamon from the initial Hamon) in the form of a sun and moon. So on each face of the blade it has a set of a sun and moon, this is meant to represent both day and night. Really a treat to see, not only that but it is forged in the shape of what we call Naginata Naoshi, made to resemble a Naginata but intended to be a Wakizashi.
